What is the Data Transport Agent?
The Data Transport Agent provides a common mechanism for synchronizing and transporting a variety of data
between a variety of systems. The software sits in your system tray, periodically checking for modified
information and then copying or moving it to another location, based on criteria of your choice. Doesn't
sound like much? - consider these common applications:
- File backup and restore to removable disk
- Offsite file backup and restore to FTP server
of your choice
- Uploading invoicing information from your
accounting software to an online customer website
- Synchronizing product information between your product database and your e-commerce website
The Data Transport Agent has been developed primarily to provide other developers with a robust, managed
interface and synchronization architecture from which they can create their own synchronization modules (using the Microsoft .Net Framework) based
on the synchronization requirements of their own company.
